BitGo Launches Global Markets Division Following NYDIG…

BitGo has launched BitGo Global Markets, a new institutional business combining liquidity, execution, financing, derivatives, collateral management and settlement following its acquisition of NYDIG’s institutional trading operation in August.Pete Janney, who joined BitGo from NYDIG as Head of Financial Infrastructure, has been appointed Head of Global Markets. The division incorporates BitGo’s existing institutional trading and Prime Services businesses alongside derivatives, financing and structured-product capabilities acquired from NYDIG.About 30 NYDIG employees joined BitGo through the August 27 transaction, bringing existing institutional client relationships and experience across derivatives, financing, collateral servicing and structured products.

What Does BitGo Global Markets Add?

The new unit is designed to give institutional clients a single relationship for execution, credit, derivatives and post-trade services rather than requiring separate providers for each part of the trading lifecycle.BitGo’s Global Liquidity Layer will connect clients to liquidity from exchanges, market makers and OTC counterparties. Institutional users will be able to trade electronically through APIs and other execution systems or use BitGo’s OTC desk for larger and more complex transactions. The financing business allows eligible clients to borrow against digital assets rather than sell them to raise liquidity. BitGo can hold the collateral in qualified custody while handling margin monitoring, collateral servicing and liquidation processes associated with secured financing arrangements.Eligible counterparties will also gain access to options, swaps and structured products for hedging, directional exposure and customized portfolio outcomes. The launch develops the strategy BitGo outlined when it acquired NYDIG’s institutional trading business. That deal was intended to add financing and derivatives capabilities to BitGo’s existing custody, trading and settlement infrastructure.

Investor Takeaway

The NYDIG acquisition is now moving from integration into product deployment. The commercial test is whether BitGo can turn custody relationships into additional revenue from financing, derivatives and execution without requiring institutions to move to another provider.

Why Is Financing Important to BitGo’s Institutional Strategy?

Custody by itself does not address one of the main operational problems for institutional crypto traders: assets often have to be distributed across multiple venues to meet margin requirements and maintain access to liquidity.BitGo has been building infrastructure intended to reduce that fragmentation. Its Go Network allows customers to keep assets in custody while settling trades with participating venues and counterparties, separating custody from the execution venue. That model was extended in August when Spotex integrated BitGo custody with its crypto ECN, allowing eligible institutional clients to trade while assets remained within BitGo’s regulated custody structure.More recently, BitGo became the first custodian supporting Kalshi Prime’s HODL Margining network, which allows eligible customers to use digital assets held at BitGo as collateral for dollar loans used to meet trading margin requirements.Global Markets brings that collateral and financing logic directly into BitGo’s own institutional franchise.

Investor Takeaway

Financing can deepen the economics of a custody relationship because client assets become usable collateral rather than passive balances. The opportunity for BitGo is to keep assets inside its custody environment while generating additional activity from loans, trading and derivatives.

How Does Global Markets Change BitGo Prime?

BitGo has offered institutional trading through BitGo Prime since 2020. That operation now becomes part of the broader Global Markets unit rather than remaining primarily an execution and liquidity product.BitGo Prime has already expanded its liquidity network this year. Virtu Financial joined BitGo Prime as a liquidity provider in July, giving institutional clients access to pricing from one of the largest electronic market-making firms while assets remained within BitGo’s custody and settlement infrastructure.Global Markets extends that model into more complex institutional products. In addition to spot and OTC execution, the business will provide options, swaps, collateral management, structured solutions, managed strategies, private funds and institutional research.Research has also been absorbed from NYDIG. In September, BitGo established a dedicated research unit led by former NYDIG Global Head of Research Greg Cipolaro, adding market-structure and digital-asset analysis to its institutional offering.

What Does BitGo Gain From Owning More of the Trade Lifecycle?

BitGo’s strategy increasingly resembles a digital-asset version of the multi-service institutional model used by traditional prime brokers, where custody, financing, execution, collateral and settlement are interconnected.CEO Mike Belshe said Global Markets combines BitGo’s existing custody, liquidity, trading, financing and settlement infrastructure with deeper capital-markets expertise from the NYDIG team. For clients, the potential benefit is fewer operational relationships and less movement of collateral between providers. For BitGo, the model creates more opportunities to earn revenue from the same institutional assets through execution, financing and derivatives rather than relying principally on custody fees. The company has not disclosed expected Global Markets revenue, financed balances or trading volumes. Those figures will ultimately determine whether the NYDIG acquisition materially changes BitGo’s financial profile.

Investor Takeaway

Global Markets moves BitGo further from being primarily a crypto custodian toward becoming an institutional financial intermediary. The key indicators will be growth in trading activity, financing balances, derivatives usage and assets retained on the platform rather than the number of services offered.
